Description
Whether you need help sorting out facts from sensationalism, or you just want to carry on informed discussions about global warming, Cocktail Party Guide to Global Warming provides you with the knowledge and confidence to draw your own conclusions and converse intelligently about this topic.
This guidebook explains the basics of global warming and alternative energy in clear, objective language. It provides straightforward answers to frequently asked questions, and clarifies common misconceptions. This book summarizes key points of scientific papers from the world's highest authorities on climate change, including the Nobel Prize winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). It also explains the relationships between climate change, global warming, greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide, natural processes and cycles, human activities, and fossil fuels. The chapters may be read individually or in sequence, serving as educational references that will help you interpret everything you see, hear, and read about global warming in the future.
This book also provides uplifting, optimistic information about potential solutions to global warming in our lifetime. It describes fascinating alternative energy technologies under development today, such as solar, wind, geothermal, micro-hydro, ocean, and bioenergy.
Why I wrote the book
After completing my master's thesis related to global warming and alternative energy, I noticed that whenever I was in social situations like dinner parties, cocktail parties, or even coffee shops, I would overhear others talking about global warming and I was surprised at the amount of misinformation being exchanged. Despite the enormous amount of news we hear and see on global warming every day, many of us are just getting more confused because we receive this information in sound bites and we need help connecting the dots. So I wrote this book to help readers connect the dots.
It also dawned on me that during nearly two years of research I had not come across any books that explained the basics of global warming and alternative energy in clear, simple language that readers could digest quickly and easily. While reading global warming books and articles written by scientists, I noticed they are often very technical and unable to express themselves in ordinary language. I am not a scientist; rather, I am an expert in translating complex technical information into everyday language.
I also noticed that many global warming books available today are strongly biased in their ideology towards one point of view or another, with each author offering their own political, morale, environmentalist, or anti-environmentalist message. This book is not written from any of these points of view; instead, it's written from a human perspective.
The issue of global warming, particularly the plight of our planet and the implications for the biosphere we bequeath to future generations, increasingly weighs on my conscience as it does for so many of you. As with any 12 step program, awareness is step one, but how do we become aware of the facts? To reach awareness, we first need access to information, so I was determined to gather information available from the most credible sources and translate it into ordinary language for easy access by readers.
